Shanti Shack: A studio room for rent in Koramangala, Bangalore
๐ View on Google MapsA no-frills, all-inclusive studio โ set up, sorted, ready to move in.
What is Shanti Shack?
Shanti Shack, the studio, is compact, cosy, and full of character. Perched on top of a 2-storey independent house, this studio has been lived in โ and has seen artists, poets, nomads, techies, and many others through career and life transitions, work visits, reunions, staycations, or just a need for a change of scenery. Even though it's modest in its offerings, it offers what few others do: the independence of your own place, while also having the convenience of everything taken care of (aka me). This may not be your forever home, but even for a little while, it'll be memorable for sure.

The neighbourhood
The lane where the house is
Located in Koramangla 8th block, near Adugodi and 7th Block, the house is close enough to all the action in the busiest social area of Bangalore, and yet tucked away in a quiet lane away from the traffic and noise.Leading up to it are tons of delis, shops, salons, restaurants and darshinis. About a km away and a 10-min walk away is the famous 5th block 'Boho' lane that houses hundreds of cafes, restaurants and bars. On the other side, also around 1 km away is the Forum Mall, a huge shopping and entertainment mall with a movie multiplex, restaurants, designer shops, cafes and more.
Inside Shanti Shack
-
A. The space
Bright, airy and boho. There's a queen (60*48") bed, an air cooler, and a full wardrobe with mirror in the room. As well as a work station with hundreds of books.
-
B. Kitchen setup
Unfortunately, this room doesn't come with a kitchen or has access to a common kitchen, but there's a mini kitchenette space with an induction stove, kettle, a mini fridge and some basic cooking utensils and dishes. Chai and Maggi sorted. For everything else, there's Zomato and your local meal delivery service or just walk to the hundreds of cafes and darshinis Koramangla is abundant with.
-
C. Attached washroom
Ensuite washroom with a western toilet, and shower space with a handshower.
-
D. Terrace
Arguably the best part of the house, especially when the famous Bangalore weather kicks in. Spend early mornings or sunsets over tea, call friends over or just enjoy a few refreshing moments under the morning sun and the open skies - a rare luxury in a concrete jungle.
-
E. The "1BHK next door"
There's a 1BHK next door and one hopes you'll be friends with its occupant/s. I manage both the spaces and some of the amenities are shared between the two houses such as the househelp, electricity connection, and the wifi. The RO water in your room is refilled from the 1BHK kitchen as well as the dishes done in its sink. If you sign up for laundry, it's done in the wshing machine in the 1BHK. If you're friends with the person in the 1BHK, you might even consider the 1BHK+studio setup like a 2 BHK.
The pros and the cons
The pros
- โ Great location
- โ No hefty deposit
- โ Reliable owner (heh)
- โ Close to all the action
- โ Cosy decor, lots of books
- โ Open terrace
The cons
Yes, there're a few โ and I believe in laying them out upfront so you can decide whether to proceed, at the outset.
- โ (relatively) Small room
- โ Not super fancy(read no overhead LED lights, wall paneling etc.)
- โ Doesn't have a proper kitchen
- โ No power backup
- โ No amenities like a gym, swimming pool, or lift. (But who needs them when you have parks and gyms within walking distance?)
What can this place be?
A hassle-free, no-commitment space that's ready to move in.
A stopgap arrangement for people looking for their forever home.
A no-frills, short-term stay in Bangalore, close to all the action.
Who this place is for
A young-ish bachelor โ ideally someone who doesn't cook or stay at home much, and just wants a basic but set-up place to chill and crash at.
What it costs, and what that covers
-
โ
The rent (duh)
-
โ
WaterFor bathing, cleaning, and the loo โ billed by meter, typically up to โน1,000/month, and included in your rent.
-
โ
Daily house helpDidi will mop, sweep, and dust your room daily (or almost), and take dirty dishes and bring clean ones back. End-to-end laundry is available too, at an extra cost.
-
โ
InternetACT Fibernet.
-
โ
ElectricityOn a fair usage policy โ don't be running 2000W appliances all day just because "it's all included."
-
โ
RO waterThere's a flask in your room, refilled as many times as needed.
-
โ
Random odds and endsUnlike a one-and-done landlord, I like staying involved with the house and investing in its upkeep over time. Don't be surprised to find a random plant or a book in your room once in a while.
-
โ
Occasional maintenanceAppliance breakdowns, paint jobs, replacements and repairs โ it's never-ending! But luckily for you, I bear the loss and the costs. However, anything that happens to the house once you've moved in (short of a wall caving in) is on you.
About the owner
At the outset โ I'm not the legal owner of the house, but rather the manager. After living here for years, I've continued the lease and now manage it like an Airbnb/rental, in liaison with the actual owner -- who's a lovely and elderly gentleman who lives abroad. But for all intents and purposes, I'm the owner, and you'll be dealing with me.
